The Problem of Evil and the Skeptic's Dilemma

The Argument from Evil (also called the "Problem of Evil") is the most important argument against theism. But are atheists consistent when they use this argument? In this lecture, I show that atheists often employ an inconsistent methodology when they examine arguments for and against the existence of God. Demanding consistency, however, puts atheists in a dilemma (the "Skeptic's Dilemma").

  2. @DavidWood Im just part way through vid. Thoughts so far on evil and suffering. All of creation fell when mankind fell away from God. We can only dream about what it would have been like..but scripture tells us because of Gods tangible presence it was like heaven on earth in fact God moved between the two realms and spent face time with the couple daily..they heard his footsteps so it was likely Jesus doing face to face with them. When God had to separate because of sin..mankind and nature fell into distepair animals ate each other mankind ate animals when previously all ate plants. Adam and Eve covered themselves with skins when previously they may have worn Gods glory..possibly light.
My bottom line here is new testament says creation waits for sons of God to be revealed because they will put creation into order again. Perhaps return to vegan is a start?

Bottom line 2 it is fatalism to say God is controlling everything. Planet was given to man at creation..Satan stole it..Jesus bought it back at fall. Jesus gives it to his tedeemed ones us. We have to drive the usurper off what belongs to us. Nature evils not from God...nature is in the fall..also devils play with nature inspiring worse suffering...land in bible is said to react to innocent blood shed on it?

I believe Jesys gave us his name to use to set things right..from nature physical sickness disasters. Jesus spoke to storms saying quiet down he tild us to speak to mountains of troubles tell them to move...etc.

Gid is not the author of disease..where would he get it there is no disease in heaven. Suffering started at sin the fall and us now bound up in life but doesnt have to be. Believers can use the name receive what Jesus did when he was on earth.

  3. - the above is my rationale of why suffering is on the earth from scripture and what the believer can do and is supposed to do about it.
THE PROB. OF EVIL AND SKEPTICS DILEMMA
EXACTLY! Either atheist is in denial or is being consciously intellectually dishonest ...by not using same scales of examination to conclude when it comes to arguments for God.

A- theists are possibly in rebellion and have chosen the god of self and doing whatever seems good to them in their own eyes.

Confronting them with their inconsistencies is a great idea.

    This is an excellent argument.

  4. @DavidWood-my following comment isnt addressing atheism s ideas ir arguments..just Christians..God calls himself good..therefore from Christian pov all His actions are ..further God calls Himself Love therefore his actions will be too.
I dont subscribe to argument God allowed such and such...therefore it was His will. This is faulty reasoning because we know lots happens that isnt His will..we have text quote God is NOT WILLING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH endquote. This is prime example showing what is against Gods will is often what is occurring. Another example is Jesus taught us to pray this way asking for Gods will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. Because we are to continually ask for this..means it is something we should desire and ask for and that it is not the norm of what is already happening.

Jesus taught us to interact with faith prayers doing some actioñ with it. Nothi.g was automatic when JESUS was on the earth. Jesus went around correcting everyones life situation to change it by Gods power.
JESUS never left anyone in a bad situation...he NEVER SAID..OH THIS disease is here to help you grow..or without this lack of money youll get girlfriends and betray your marriage..etc..JESUS NE ER TAUGHT THERE WAS GOOD IN A N Y DISEASE..HE GOT RID OF THEM ALL.
THIS IS TEACHNG OF JESUS ON KINGDOM OF GOD.

I know Paul suffered but he also described it and told the source was a messenger! of satan sent to buffet means beat up keep him from gettng lifted up into revelation...cause we know satan WOULD WANT PAUL TO GET PRIDEFUL...satan would not try to keep paul humble..satan was not helping pàul satan was against pauls success and good character.
Therefore looking strictly at Jesus s teachingss and actions we see satan responsible for even sickness because quote Jesus HEALED all who were oppressed of the devil...the greatest part of scripture supports this view...only a couple instances show God revealing future hardships coming pauls way but they were not from God..Gid didnt say Paul had to leave them as painful..God said my GRACE IS SUFFUCIENT THIS DIES N O T MEAN N O. CHRISTUAN CHURCHES TEACH THIS BUT BIBLE NEVER SAYS IT. GRACE SUFFUCIENT MEANS GOD PROVIDES SUPERNATURAL POWER TO CHANGE THE CIRCUMSTANCE AND GET OUT OF IT.
WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE ARE MIGHTY..POWER WEAPONS SUPERPOWER SUPERNATURAL SUPERMEN AND WOMEN..NIT JUST APOSTLES OF OLD...THESE SUGNS WILL FOLLOW THOSE WHO BELIEVE...CAST OUT DEVILS like Jesus..raise the dead..heal the sick (is there ANY EXCEPTION CLAUSE HERE? EXCEPT FOR DAVUD WOOD AND MARIES KIDS BECAUSE THEY ALL NEED TO SUFFER? N O!!!!!:)

    1. Calvinism i think is a misnomer. So, biblical theology is that all things happen because God has ordained them . God has complete control. I can't even raise my hand if God hadn't allowed me . In Ephesians when it says all things happen according to the counsel of his will. That a sparrow couldn't fall from the sky without his allowing it to occur. Knowledge of our deaths and therefore our lives. He ordained the means and the ends.

      1. The term will has different usages . So, example is his prefect (or sovereign ) will . His permissive will. and will of disposition.
      2. 2Peter 3:9 is talking about believers.
      3. I couldn't identify any other arguments worth interacting with.

    2. 2 Peter 3:9 is talking about believers? Could you say why you think so?
Could you elaborate on 'God ordaining all things' and controlling everything?

    3. 2 Peter 3:9 "8.But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
9.The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance."
One question that should be asked is what's the "promise" and the "you".
The promise is not a promise about salvation but rather it is about the second coming( Verses 3-7).
The you is clearly a group called the beloved. Which is the group he addresses in 8 that follows into 9 and the same who are in verse 11 which their suppose to be in "holy conduct and godliness". Which clearly is followed by believers.

God knew and predestined every event. Nothing could've happened contrary to the perfect plan of God . Everything holds together because of him ( Colossians 1:17) and all things occur because his will ( Ephesians 1:11, Romans 8:28). The Death of Jesus Christ was no accident. Now,this question seems like you're wondering if God's in control of everything 1. Why does evil occur? and 2. How can man be free?. 1. God has a purpose in evil to bring about his will. Which is to Glorify himself and save his people.
      2. The issue is rather your concept of freedom. You assume if man is free it must be Autonomous or in a Libertarian sense of it. Which I deny that assumption . Actually, I think ultimately it is more problematic. But Compatiblism view of freedom is that we choose according to our greatest inclination at the moment. Which is an attempt to be consistent with the Calvinist doctrine of total depravity ( or total inability or radical corruption) and God's sovereignty.

  5. Brother David thank you for taking the time to put this together. I watched the video on Youtube just now (The Problem of Evil and the Skeptic's Dilemma (David Wood) and then found this blog site. These are such a well presented, easy to digest and repeat points of logic to arm myself with and use when people ask me to explain the existence of evil and using it as a reason for why God can't exist. It makes me feel a bit more confident about being able to "defend the faith," more clearly and persuasively in the future and makes me think that, I too, one day can go out and make disciples! It also helps me to solidify my new found faith. (About a year ago I was saved at 46 years old!) Sometimes I "know a thing" but I am not so good at explaining it. I took notes and I think I'll watch this video a few times to really get it down. Good everyday examples by the way with the Stepford Wives and holding your son down for a needle! I watched your testimony video a few days ago and was in awe of what God can do with a broken soul. (No offense, I was pretty loopy too!) Blessing to you and your family David.
